Dear Church Family,

We had quite the electrical storm this past Monday night, didn’t we? Thunderstorms were common where I grew up – and I never liked them. Sometimes, when they were close and loud, I was very frightened. Monday nights storm occurred when I was out for the evening with friends playing cards. – there were several bolts and crashes that were very close, the lights went out once for a few seconds, but we remained focused on the game and I found camaraderie with my friends so the storm didn’t was more of an annoying party guest that was going out of the way to get attention.

It was a good lesson – staying focused on the game and the company of friends. Sometimes when the “storms” of life appear as illness, fear of change, or a life challenge the storm gets all our attention. We only focus on the storm. In fact, we become so focused on the storm we forget we have a choice in where to put our attention.

Yet, as Truth Students we do have choices. And when we reflect on our third principle (“We create our life experiences through our way of thinking. Everything we create begins with a thought.”) we realize that the storm is only as powerful as we think it is. This is not to deny the storms can’t be destructive, they can be. In our human experience we have witnessed storms with great force and destruction. However, our experience of the storm is up to us. We choose how to respond, how to take care of ourselves, what energy we put into it.

Monday night was mostly a light show, though there were a lot of small fires that were put out quickly and a nice soaking of much needed rain. I’m grateful for the distraction my friends provided and grateful the storm caused little damage. I hope I will use this experience when the next “storm” appears.

Affirming your focus is on God’s Good, too.

Many blessings,
Pastor Robert
